Pacific Coast Highway to SF

To really get the most out of the Pacific Coast Highway (either the four lane rte. 101 or the more daring two lane route 1), you need to travel south from San Francisco to Los Angeles. The ocean will then be on your right, making quick stop-offs for sites easier. Follow rte. 1 south out of San Francisco and you'll wind through the most amazing rock formations and cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Half Moon Bay, just south of San Francisco and across the coastal range from Silicone Valley is one of the few places in the Bay area to enjoy a taditional ocean beach. It is a series of several beachs owned by the state, and there's a daily charge.
San Francisco

SAN FRAN-CIS-CO! One of the most expensive big cities in the world. Perhaps with good reason. SF is an East Coast city on the car infested West Coast. Getting around by foot is easy, if only there weren't so many steep hills. The downtown is very compact. Chinatown is only a few blocks away. The marina has a major tourist stroll called Fisherman's Wharf. Even the famous Golden Gate Bridge can be walked across (as long as you get back to your car before the parking meter expires).
